Baritone Colin Levin: Baritone Colin Levin’s career on both the opera and concert stages
began in high gear. Stepping in on a moment’s notice as Figaro in Il Barbiere di Siviglia served as his spectacular debut with Winter
Opera St. Louis, the company where he appeared as Betto di Signa in Gianni
Schicchi. Another auspicious debut
followed with the Caramoor Festival in Donizetti's Maria di Rohan and Bellini's Norma. Upcoming engagements include John Brooke
in Adamo's Little Women with the Boston Opera
Collaborative (MA).
Mr. Levin
returns to St. Petersburg Opera (FL) to perform Mr. Lindquist
in A Little Night Music. Morales and the cover of El Dancairo in Carmen
are next on the agenda with the company.
Mr. Levin has regularly taken the stage there as Baron Douphol in La
Traviata, Bogdanovitch and covering Njegus in The Merry Widow,
as well as Figaro in The Barber of St. Petersburg.
The role of L'ombre de Samuel in the North
American professional stage premier of Charpentier's David et Jonathas with American
Opera Theater in Washington and New York performances were the scenes
of triumphant performances. The baritone
performed the role of Mr. Jenks and covered Top in Copland’s The
Tenderland with the Sugar Creek Symphony and Song (IL).
He sang Dandini in La Cenerentola with Opera del West (MA),
and debuted as Tobias Mill in Rossini's La Cambiale di Matrimonio with
the Oberlin in Italy Program, a role he had also performed with Longwood
Opera (MA). Two summers, during his early performing years, were spent
as a studio artist with Opera New Jersey, where he most notably performed
Samuel in The Pirates of Penzance, covered Dandini in La
Cenerentola and comprimario roles in La Traviata,The Merry Widow, Romeo
et Juliette, and Die Zauberflote.
Concert
appearances include the baritone soloist in Ein deutsches Requiem,
the Faure Requiem, Vaughan-Williams' Dona Nobis Pacem,
and Messiah. A favorite of
Tito Capobianco, Sharon Sweet, Kathleen Kelly, Ana de Archuleta, James Lowe,
Sally Wolf, Kevin Langan, David Pittman-Jennings, Jane Bunnell, and Max van
Egmond, Mr. Levin was featured in their master classes. He won the prestigious
Albert Rees Award from the S. Livingston
Mather Competition in Cleveland.
The
Oberlin Conservatory Dean's Talent Award student, completing a double major in
voice and musicology, under Marlene Rosen, the baritone received his Bachelor
of Music degree. During his
undergraduate years with Oberlin he performed Gideon/Mr. Dashwood in Little
Women, Starveling in A Midsummer Night's Dream, Tobias Mill
in La Cambiale di Matrimonio, Comus in Charpentier's Le Plaisir
de Versailles, and Antonio in Le Nozze di Figaro under the
baton of Eve Queler (NY). He also appeared as guest artist with the Stocker Arts Center Opera Theater (OH)
as Figaro in Le Nozze di Figaro.
Mr. Levin
is completing his Master of Music at the University of Illinois: Urbana-Champaign, which he attended on a
full scholarship and fellowship studying with Jerold Siena and coaching with
Julie and Nathan Gunn. At the University
he has appeared as Mercutio in Romeo et Juliette, Sam in Trouble
in Tahiti, and Sid in Albert Herring. He currently studies
with the renowned teacher and coach Arthur Levy of NYC
Having a great interest in music history, the baritone spends significant time researching
the music of Leos Janacek, as well as the operas of Richard Wagner, Richard
Strauss, and Giuseppi Verdi. He has lectured in introductory courses on Wagner
at Oberlin Conservatory. The spring of
2007 marked Mr. Levin’s first appearance on national and international radio
for WNYC and NPR with a segment entitled "The Sexual Mystery" in The
Tristan Mysteries.
